For a new player playing for The Habs, they have to see what numbers are available. Not only you can't take the numbers worn by actual teammates, but also they have to respect the several retired numbers.
1 - 2 - 4 - 5 - 7 - 9 - 10 - 12(2 players) - 16 - 18 - 29
7 of the first 10 and 8 of the first 12 are retired.
Next will be 11 worn by Saku Koivu.
